Responsible Tourist |
| |
Tourist can make a big difference by only supporting the type of tourism that is not harmful to the environment and is supportive of local communicates working to gain or maintain sustainable livelihoods. The seven point of the code are a good place to start. |
|
General Code for Responsible Tourism
|
|
Learn About The Country |
-
Learn Key Words in the Local Language
-
Be Aware of religious and social customs ( in Africa it is not a sign of homosexuality for two men to be holding hands while walking down the street; Ugandans are relatively conservative and so wearing short skirts or shorts in villages is not appropriate, the same with mid riff tops)
-
Visit the visitors centre on arrival for local information
|
|
Know The Appropriate Cultural Behaviour |
-
Respect the dignity and privacy of others-ask before taking photos
-
Dress and behave respectfully especially in villages, religious and cultural areas
-
Be careful giving gifts or money to children and beggars
|
|
Protect The Wildlife and Wild Places of Uganda |
-
Do not buy products made from indigenous hardwoods of Uganda
-
Do not buy products made from wild animals or plants, such as drum with monitor lizard skin; ivory, animal skins etc
-
Do not remove plants and animals for protected areas
-
Do not buy wild animals, report to the local police or wildlife authorities if someone tries to sell you any wild animal.
|
|
Support Local Incentives |
-
Purchase local products, arts and crafts rather than souvenirs made overseas
-
Eat local rather than imported food
-
Support local tour operators and stay in locally owned accommodation; support local community groups
|
|
Pay A Fair Price |
- 50 cents may not mean much to you, but it may be a meal for the vendor
- Pay a price that reflects what something is worth to you
|
|
Minimise Environmental Impact |
- Dispose of rubbish carefully, recycle where possible, reuse your drink bottles, and say ‘NO’ to canned drinks as Uganda has not provision to recycle. Use glass bottles that are reused instead
- Minimise water and power use
- Choose environmentally responsible tour operators
- Take home your batteries, Uganda has no provisions for recycling or safely disposing of batteries
- Say ‘No’ to most plastic products including bags and straws,
|
|
Think About Your Impact |
- Remember you are a guest- don’t do anything you wouldn’t do at home
- Practice safe and responsible sex
- Make your trip a positive experience for both you and the people in the country you visit.
