RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

A trip to the Rwenzoris is an exhilarating and rewarding experience but one which must be well planned. The key to an enjoyable visit is to “be prepared!” The central circuit hike takes six nights/ seven days and reaches an altitude of 14,000 ft (4,267m) above sea level. The conditions on the mountain are a challenge to even an experienced hiker. This mountain is reknown for its un-engineered steep and slippery trails and frequent rain. Rainfall and cold temperatures, bogs, mud, steep terrain and high altitude make it a challenging trip.

KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

Kidepo is one of Uganda’s most spectacular parks (1,442 sq km). it harbours a scenery unsurpassed in any other park in East Africa. “It could not be any better” is a common comment on the scenery by visitors who often promise and do come back to Kidepo. Tucked into the corner of Uganda’s border with Sudan and Kenya, the park offers breathtaking savannah and mountain landscapes, which end in a rugged horizon. LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP) is a very special place; every part of it is alive with variety, interest and colour. LMNP contains an extensive area of wetland. The park harbours several species of mammals including zebras, impalas, elands, topi and buffaloes. The bird population includes the rare Shoebill stork. Its sculptured landscape with rolling grassy hills and idyllic lakeshores has a varied mosaic of habitats: forest galleries, rich acacia tree valleys, seasonal and permanent swamps which all support a wealth of wildlife.

MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL PARK

Mt. Elgon has been an extinct volcano that first erupted more than 24 million years ago. With the largest surface area of any extinct volcano in the world (50km by 80km), Mt. Elgon is the forth highest mountain in East Africa, with the highest peak in Uganda (Wagagai peak, 4321 metres). It contains the largest intact caldera, a collapsed crater covering over 40kms at the top of the mountain, surrounded by a series of rugged peaks. The Bagisu and the Sabiny are the two ethnic tribes around the mountain.

MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Murchison Falls Protected Area (MFPA) comprises of Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP), Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves. Murchison Falls National Park derives its name from the Murchison Falls where the mighty River Nile explodes through a narrow gorge and flows down to become a placid river whose banks are thronged with hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks and buffaloes. The vegetation is characterized by savannah, riverine forest and woodland. Wildlife includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hartebeests, oribis, Uganda kobs, chimpanzees and many bird species including the rare shoebill.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) together with Kyambura and Kigezi Wildlife Reserves form one of the most diverse ecosystems in Africa. The melting glacier waters of the Rwenzori Mountains create a vast wetland system comprising of two main lakes, George and Edward, as well as the connecting Kazinga Channel. Thousands of hippos populate these lake shorelines. Open savannah dotted with Acacia and Euphorbia trees provide habitat for elephants, lions, leopards, Uganda kobs and big herds of buffaloes. Ten primate species including chimpanzees are present. Among the many animals frequently seen are giant forest hog, waterbucks, topi, hyenas and crocodiles. The park boasts of more bird species than any other park in Africa.

BWINDI NATIONAL PARK

Bwindi Impenetrable national park covers an area of about 331km with an altitude Range of Approximately 1160 metres (Ishasha gorge) and 2607 metres (Rwamunyonyi Peak).It receives an annual Temperature Range of 7-20 degrees Celcius the coldest Period being June-July.
Annual Precipitation is 1130 mm – 2390 mm and it experiences the heaviest rains in March-April and September – November other months being generally dry.Majority of the local people living around the park are Bakiga and Bafumbira, and it constitutes the densest settlements in Uganda, ( 233 people/ square kilometers ).Bwindi is a home to 326 gorillas, almost a half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas.It has about 120 species of mammals including 7 diurnal primates and about 30 elephants.There are about 360 species of birds and over 200 species of butterflies. This Afro -montane forest has dense under storey of fern, vines, shrubs. About 324 tree species have been recorded here,10 of which occur no where else in Uganda.
