| Plettenberg Bay |
The great forests lying at the feet of the fabled Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains are the gateway to the incredible indigenous African wealth of Plettenberg Bay, originally christened "Bahia Formosa" (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers. The town lies on South Africa's spectacular south coast 210 kms from Port Elizabeth and +/- 600 km from Cape Town. The Outeniqua-Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and temperate forest and offer the nature lover world-renowned hiking trails and an exciting opportunity to see the last remaining forest elephants of South Africa. The entire area teems with birdlife. Nearly 300 species are to be found in the great variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.
No less than ten important nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. The bay itself is nursery to the endangered Southern Right Whale which come here to calve in the winter and spring (July to December). Plettenberg Bay is an ideal base from which to explore the Garden Route. The area is a sports paradise and boasts fabulous trails for hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders and canoeists. The highlight of the area is undoubtedly the rivers, beaches and the bay with its ideal conditions for all kinds of watersports, including sailing in the safe waters of the Bay, superb rock and surf fishing and scuba diving spots. Alternately one can simply stroll along its clean, sandy beaches stretching for miles along the Indian Ocean or enjoy its safe swimming areas. At night, Plettenberg Bay is alive with pubs, night-spots and fine restaurants. |

| DAY 2: PLETTENBERG BAY - KNYSNA |
This morning you have an early start, as you make your way to The Plettenberg Bay Country Club, for your first game of golf. This golf course is ranked Gold 40 in South Africa |
| |
Plettenberg Bay Golf Course, Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route. Rated no 40 in SA. |
Every year thousands of holiday-makers from all over southern Africa flock to the beaches, luxury hotels and paradise-like setting of Plettenberg Bay, which is situated on the famous and beautiful Garden Route. It's a sporty place, with most of the activities focused around the sea, surf, lake and lagoon. But 'Plett' also has an excellent golf course, set in the lovely Piesang (Banana) Valley, which is surrounded by high hills. The whole area has been proclaimed a nature reserve and it is rich in bird life and home to the strikingly beautiful Knysna Loerie.
This is no little seaside golf course, it is a magnificent 18-hole layout in the most lovely of settings. All greens and bunkers are to USGA specifications. All greens and fairways are on automatic sprinkler systems - the result is a golf course you will remember. Upgraded by Rob O’Friell, in 2000, the 18 superb, new bent-grass greens have been built to USGA specifications. Their new shapes and slopes plus the new bunkers and water features have created a challenging yet beautiful course. The golf course is set in a park-like, proclaimed nature reserve and is the pride of the golfers of Plettenberg Bay.
The 470-metre par-five 4th hole plays particularly long in a southeaster when the average golfer will have little chance of reaching the water-guarded green in two, and sometimes even in three. By contrast the 11th is only 110 metres long, one of the shortest par-threes in the country. The 300-metre par-four 14th is a sharp dogleg-left which features two tall oak trees which are on the left-hand side of the fairway just after the hole curves towards the green. The foliage makes the drive an exacting one. |
| |
While the golfers are out enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful coastal weather, the non golfers can walk around the quaint little town and get some shopping done.
After the game you will head off to Knysna. This is a little town set round the famous Knysna Forest. The greenery and beauty is alone an attraction. |
| |
| Knysna |
The weather in this part of the world is always mild, and the waters hold an uncommon richness of marine life. This is where the cold and warm waters of the Indian Ocean meet and mix. You are likely to see big schools of common dolphins, as well as endangered Bottlenose and shy Humpback dolphins, as well as the resident Orca and Bryde’s whales and the migratory Humpback and Southern Right whales (the whale season has just started!) It’s also the only place in the world where the rare Tropical Beaked whale has been found. Many elevated look-out points offer excellent land-based whale watching, and marine safaris provide the chance to see these gentle giants at closer quarters. Don’t miss the Nelson Bay Cave in the Robberg Nature Reserve, where the Nelson Bay Cave is to be found. This is an archaeological site with evidence of human habitation that dates back more than 120 thousand years. Discover the world of monkeys, lemurs, gibbons and other primates at the Monkeyland sanctuary, and find out about the plight of the African Elephant as you meet the rescued elephants that now live in a controlled, free range environment at the Knysna Elephant Park. Spend some time with these unique animals on an Elephant Interaction, or even try an Elephant Ride.
You’ll visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve, a unique 150ha private reserve, embraces the whole western head of Knysna, one of South Africa's Natural Heritage Sites, embraced by the world famous landmarks, the spectacular Knysna Heads (2 giant sandstone cliffs which mark the Knysna River's entrance). It is home to 2 of the Garden Route's icons, namely the Knysna Loerie and the Blue Duiker, one of Africa's smallest antelope species. Other wildlife found on the Reserve include the Cape Mountain Tortoise, Blue Crane South Africa's national bird, rare Black African Oyster Catcher, White breasted Cormorant and Bushbuck to name a few. Guests can enjoy the tranquility of the area, while picnicking under Milkwood Trees with sightings of the elusive and brightly coloured Knysna Loerie. Relax with peaceful walks amid indigenous Fynbos and enjoy visits to the 'Beachcomber' caves, while discovering the secrets of Coffin Bay. Enjoy the fine art, the craft route, museums, great shopping and excellent restaurants, not to mention Knysna’s most famous export, fresh oysters grown in the Knysna Lagoon. A visit to Knysna is a great adventure, and it has been voted South Africa’s favourite town.

| |
| DAY 3: KNYSNA - FANCOURT - GEORGE |
This morning after breakfast your next round of golf awaits you at The Pezula Championship Golf Course. This course holds Platinum Status and is ranked as 14 th in South Africa. |
| |
Pezula Golf Course |
Pezula Championship Golf Course, Knysna, Garden Route: Situated in the very heart of the Garden Route, on sweeping coastal cliffs, east of the charming town of Knysna, Pezula encompasses a Private Estate, a Five Star Resort Hotel, a world-class Championship Golf Course and Club. Golf Course: The Championship Golf Course lies high above the Indian Ocean and the vast Knysna lagoon - a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine indigenous landscape. The Championship Course is primarily for member play, offering referred access to visitors on a space-available basis.
The course’s designers, Ron Fream and David Dale have compared the look of Pezula golf course to that of Gleneagles in the Scottish Highlands and Pebble beach on the Monterey coastline. A terrain of rolling fairways, fynbos and eyebrow bunkers does, however, make it very difficult to walk this course. (panic golf carts are provided for all golfers). The five different tee options on every hole cater for all skill levels. No two challenges, or views, are alike.
Signature Hole: The signature holes are the three holes built on the cliff top overlooking the ocean; the par-five 13th, par-four 14th and the par-three 15th. The par-four 14th is particularly challenging - it is short and requires you to lay-up before firing at the pin. The green is completely surrounded by bunkers so be careful not to overshoot out-of-bounds and over the cliff. Golf Club: The stylishly appointed Pezula Clubhouse includes a gourmet restaurant, bar, plush private lounge with library, and a boutique pro shop. A heated pool, short game practice area, tennis and leisure facility are also available to members and guests.

After the game today, head back to George where you landed. |
| |
George |
Laid out on the coastal plain below the Outeniqua Mountains, George is a picturesque town with streets lined by majestic oak trees planted soon after it was founded in 1811. The town was named in honour of the then reigning monarch, George III. Situated int eh heart of the Garden Route, Places of interest along the 1.5km long historical walking tour include the George Museum, housed in the Drodsty building. The main theme of the museum is the region’s timber industry, but it also has an important collection of vintage gramophones and musical instruments. Also to be seen along the walk is the King Edward Vii Library (the best example of Edwardian architecture in the town), the old slave tree, St Mark’s Anglican Cathedral (1850) and the historic Dutch Reformed Church (1842). The George Timber Route meanders from the George Museum past several tree species, furniture manufacturers and the Dutch Reformed Church (1842) with its magnificent yellow-wood ceiling and handcarved stinkwood pulpit. An interesting collection of railway equipment, coaches and locomotives, as well as a replica of an old station, can be seen at the Outeniqua Railway Museum. George is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who are attracted to the numerous hiking trails and walks in the nearby forests and mountains. During the hot, humid summer days locals flock to Herold's Bay or Victoria Bay to cool off. But the best way to explore the spectacular coastline is to take the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, a steam train that runs between George and Knysna. The railway also passes through the Wilderness National Park and crosses the picturesque Kaaimans River. An experience no explorer should miss! George is ideally situated to explore the famous Garden Route towns of Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Jeffereys Bay, Nature’s Valley and Tsitsikamma.

| DAY 6: FANCOURT - GEORGE - MOSSEL BAY |
Today is an early wake up call. You will be heading off to Mossel Bay. |
| |
Mossel Bay |
Halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth in the heart of the famous Garden Route, nestles the seaside town of Mossel Bay. A bustling holiday resort in summer and the ideal retreat in winter, it is situated on a spectacular sunwashed peninsula embraced by the warm Indian Ocean. Also called the "Karoo-by-the-Sea town", Mossel Bay features in the Guiness Book of Records as having the mildest all-year climate in the world, second only to Hawaii. But it's the fascinating history of Mossel Bay which grants the town its status as the historical capital of the Garden Route and one of the most significant towns in South Africa.
The first meeting ever between inhabitants of Europe and Africa on Southern African soil occurred at Mossel Bay in 1488 when Bartolomeu Dias set foot ashore and encountered the ancient Khoi-San people. The first trading between inhabitants of Europe and Africa on Southern African soil occurred at Mossel Bay when Vasco da Gama anchored in 1497 and successfully traded with the local Khoi-San tribe. The first Post Office on Southern African soil was founded at Mossel Bay when in 1500, Pedro de Ataide left a letter of importance in a shoe under a large milkwood tree. Mail is still posted at the ancient Post Office - today a national monument. The first place of Christian worship and erection of a Chapel on Southern African soil took place at Mossel Bay in 1501 when Joao da Nova erected a small stone prayer chapel dedicated to St Blaize.
Today, the mystery and romance of ancient folk and explorers is on display at the impressive Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, as well as reflected by the architectural styles, well preserved old stone buildings and various historical routes through town. In addition to this, sun-drenched, north facing beaches, outstanding coastal cuisine and the only working harbour for commercial as well as leisure craft in the Garden Route, makes Mossel Bay a veritable mecca for outdoor enthusiasts in search of a Mediterranean type climate and lifestyle.
|
| |

At the opening in November 2006, Darren Clarke was extremely enthusiastic about the new golf course and indicated that he sees it as a new winter home for his family saying, "I've found my heaven here!" He went on to describe the completed layout as "the best golf course on the planet". Peter Matkovich, the golf architect responsible for many of South Africa's premier golf courses including Arabella, Leopard Rock and Steenburg, has described Pinnacle Point as "the most dramatic golf course site I've ever encountered anywhere in the world!"
