DAY 2: JOHANNESBURG

This morning you have an early start, as you make your way to The Country Club Johannesburg, for your first game of golf on the Woodmead Course.

The Country Club Johannesburg

The Country Club Johannesburg offers two superb courses, Woodmead and Woodlands. Situated in the suburb of Sandton north of Johannesburg, this 600 hectare estate is gifted with 180 species of bird and the 14 dams, which irrigate the two championship courses, are well stocked with numerous kinds of fish. Originally designed by the Hawtree family of Golf Architects based in England both courses have recently been refurbished by the South African Course Design & Construction Company, Golf Data. The courses use Kikuyu grass on the tees, fairways and semi-rough like most South African golfing establishments. The greens are constructed to USA specifications and are seeded with the hybrid grasses L93 Bent on the Woodmead Course.

On the course, significant changes have been made which include, profound mounding in strategic places and the dams, which were previously hidden, become part of the aesthetics. This is a parkland course and the fairways on many of the holes are lined with large exotic trees. Don’t let the beauty of this layout distract you, as this challenging course requires the golfer of all levels to concentrate throughout the round. It is a test of intelligence rather than strength and offers a stimulating experience to those who play it. Both courses complement each other, and offer the golfer the choice of two very different golfing experiences. A wealth of natural resources has been blended together creating a harmonious balance between nature and the urban development surrounding the estate. The magnificent golfing facilities include excellent service, friendly staff, two fulltime teaching golf professionals, coaching academy with superb practice range and two putting greens. The club shop is well stocked with a wide range of soft goods and hardware. The Sandwedge Halfway House is recognised as one of the finest in the country, offering the golfer a perfect break during the round.

While the golfers are out enjoying the weather and sunshine, the non golfers will be collected and taken on a full day tour to Gold Reef City.

Gold Reef City

Gold and the history of Johannesburg are intertwined. The discovery of gold in the late 1890s led to a gold rush by prospectors from all over the world to the area now known as Johannesburg. A mere 6km from Johannesburg`s bustling city centre lies Gold Reef City Village, a reminder of that bygone era. Centred around shaft No. 14, which was started in 1887, Gold Reef City is an inimitable combination of a theme park, a living museum of Victorian architecture and lifestyle and a unique hotelThis fascinating theme park reflects the vibrant history of the discovery of gold by replicating Johannesburg in the mid 1800’s, and the lifestyle of those who worked on the mines. The many visitors to Gold Reef City see a combination of show, pleasure resort and a little “living theatre.”

On the grounds of a former gold mine, houses and entire streets have been rebuilt true to the originals from the gold-rush times. Most of the employees of the resort are dressed in costumes of that era. Interested visitors can take the nostalgic steam-train or a historical coach for a sightseeing tour through the extended premises. Those interested in gold mining can do the underground mine tour to see the gold-containing ore veins in the disused old mine, or observe in a small museum how real gold is poured into barrels.. There are also robotic shows, clowns, bands, can-can girls, strolling minstrels, gumboot dancers and even a mini-farm. Exciting themed rides, a casino, hotel and an entertainment complex completes the greater Gold Reef City Park.

After the game, golfers make your way back to your hotel and spend the evening at leisure. Non Golfers will be dropped off back at the hotel at the end of their tour.

DAY 3: JOHANNESBURG

This morning after breakfast your next round of golf awaits you at Glendower Golf Course. This course holds Platinum Status and is ranked as tenth in South Africa.

Glendower Gold Course

Glendower Golf Course, Edenvale, Johannesburg: Conveniently located within 10 minutes of Johannesburg International Airport, Glendower is a well designed 6 770m course, situated against a tree-covered slope. The fairways are excellent, featuring numerous hazards and narrowing at the greens. The Course: Water comes into play on 11 of the holes. The aesthetically pleasing second hole is one of the best par-fives to be found anywhere, requiring an accurate tee-shot to a fairway flanked by trouble both left and right and a water hazard next to the green. Magnificent greens, an abundance of bunkers and luscious Kikuyu fairways complete your experience. The Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg hosted the South African Open in 1989, 1993 and 1997 and is one of the top ten courses in South Africa. Due to its lush vegetation and the great variety of bird species, the course was proclaimed a nature conservation area in 1973.

After the game today, head back to your hotel for your final evening in Johannesburg.

Pretoria is an interesting city with a lot of history, and this afternoon we’ve arranged a city sightseeing tour for you.

Pretoria Tour

The tour starts with a drive through South Africa’s capital city, along purple-flowered jacaranda-tree lined streets. You’ll see the Union Buildings which houses the Office of the State President, and Church Square with its historic buildings dating back to the 1880’s, which houses the State Bank and Mint.

Then it’s on to the famous Voortrekker Monument, where you will disembark. The monument is a tribute to the Voortrekkers (early pioneers) who carried western civilization to the interior of South Africa during the Great Trek. The Great Trek started in 1835/36 and eventually some 6000 white people (mainly stock farmers and their families) left for the interior of South Africa with all their possessions. These pioneers were of Dutch, German and French descent and some were of the 1820 Settlers from Britain. The dramatic events during the Trek (which culminated in the establishment of two independent states in the interior of South Africa in 1852 and 1854) and the way of life of the Trekkers, are depicted in the frieze in the hall of fame of the monument. Your tourist guide will explain each of the seventeen sculptured friezes in the Hall of fame. This monument provides excellent photographic opportunities. Learn more about the Afrikaner and their culture.

The last point of the tour is the Melrose House Museum, which is housed in one of the best examples of late Victorian architecture in South Africa, and depicts the lifestyle of a wealthy family in the 19th century.

After the tour you will be dropped off back at your hotel, and the evening is at your leisure. You have a lot of good restaurants very close by to choose from!

DAY 5: PRETORIA

Today you will be playing at Pretoria Country Club. This club is in the Gold category and is ranked no 44 in the country.

Pretoria Country Club

Founded in 1910, the Pretoria Country Club nestles in the scenic beauty of Waterkloof, one of the city’s most prestigious suburbs. Over the years the Pretoria Country Club has become a landmark in Pretoria. It is renowned as the quality sports and social venue set in magnificent surroundings. Steeped in tradition, this club offers its members a variety of facilities in a secure environment

Golf Course: The back nine, which is noted for its big and beautiful willow trees, is particularly challenging with the 13th (400 metres) and the 15th (380 metres) both somewhat punishing par-fours where water is in play with both the tee shot as well as the approach shot.

A sophisticated irrigation system helps to keep the course beautifully green and in immaculate condition for most of the year, and the members' claim that their course is the best in the city should be taken seriously. Set in the beautiful, jacaranda-lined upmarket suburb of Waterkloof, the course is a delight to play.

After the game enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 6: PRETORIA

Today you’re playing at Silver Lakes Country Club. This course is ranked no 43 in the country, and is a Gold category course.

The land around the golf course has been restored to natural bushveld habitat with abundant wildlife. In addition the lakes were enlarged and others built and stocked with bass and many other species of fish making this one of the most sought after natural havens in South Africa. A large variety of water birds are nesting on the magnificent lakes and rare bird species like the African Spoonbills, Purple Gallinules and the magnificent Fish Eagle are also found on the estate.

The golf course is unquestionably a championship layout with no shortage of water having been designed by Peter Matkovich and trade marked with his exclusive water design.
