River Akagera, which flows along the eastern boundary of the park feeds into a maze of lakes and papyrus swamps that together make up over a third of the park. The largest of these and Rwanda’s second largest lake, Lake Ihema sits at an altitude of 1,292m on the border with Tanzania and offers stunning scenery of much of the park, the other lakes and swamps that make up the wetlands, and the neighbouring verdant hills of the countryside. Also worth a visit are Lake Shakani, which is a popular fishing spot, Lake Gishanju and Lake Mahindi. River Kagera
