National Parks & Reserves

Uganda’s National Parks and Reserves play a vital role in conservation by providing sanctuary to a variety of plant, bird and animals species. The parks that are located on both sides of the equator offer a diverse range of habitats; dense tropical rainforests, lakes, rivers and wetlands, extensive savannah grasslands, the rare afro-montane forests and even semi-arid wilderness.

Of all Uganda’s National Parks and Reserves, most of them (7) are located in the country’s mountainous west and southwest. Of note are Bwindi Impenetrable Park and Mgahinga Gorilla Park where Uganda’s most popular attraction the mountain gorillas live. Consequently, most safari itineraries follow an established circuit between Entebbe or Kampala, and the 2 gorilla parks. Fortunately, Uganda’s southwest has the greatest density of natural attractions and fairly well-developed infrastructure so, on one round trip, visitors can experience an African safari like no other, which offers all the Big 7 – mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant and rhino. Most safaris to Uganda’s parks now also include tours that explore the rich and diverse culture of the peoples living around conservation areas.

All of Uganda’s National Parks and Reserves are well serviced by safari lodges and camps that offer budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation. Many can be accessed by a chartered flight from the Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airstrip in Kampala, but can just as easily be accessed by road, which gives the visitors the flexibility to combine several wildlife experiences in different parks.
